Get a volunteer's background check done

For volunteers and their families, and for the coordinators who approve them. Some volunteer roles need a background check, such as a police or vulnerable sector check. An outside agency does the check; atduty records only that it cleared, who issued it and until when.

If you are the volunteer

  1. At the agency: apply for the check your organization asks for. Your organization can give you the letter some agencies ask for.
  2. In atduty: when the certificate arrives, open the shift or role that needs it and choose I've done my check. Your request now says Waiting for the organization.
  3. With your coordinator: show them the certificate, on paper or on screen. Do not upload it or send it through atduty: there is nowhere to keep it, on purpose.
  4. In atduty: once it is recorded, Waivers and clearances shows it as In place, with the date it lasts until. You can then sign up for the shifts that need it.

If you approve volunteers

  1. In atduty: open the Volunteer queue. A volunteer who chose I've done my check is waiting there, oldest first.
  2. With the volunteer: look at their certificate.
  3. In atduty: enter the Agency that cleared it and the date it is Cleared until, then choose Record as cleared. Name the agency only. Do not record anything the check found.
  4. If it did not clear: choose Decline. The volunteer sees only “Not approved”, whatever the reason.
  5. Your organization's own duties: A check you record is your organization's own record. If it came from a consumer reporting agency, the Fair Credit Reporting Act's duties are your organization's: the person's written consent before the check, and the notices before and after you turn someone down because of it.

If it doesn't work

  • Needs another coordinator: this is your own household.
  • The check has lapsed: it shows as Lapsed. The volunteer renews it at the agency and starts again from step 1.
